Scott Bates (March 20, 1958 - July 22, 1994)
Andrew Scott Bates, 36, died Friday, July 22, 1994 at his home at Lock Overlook Farm in Dickerson, Maryland of AIDS-related complications.
A longtime educator in the Washington, D.C. area, Scott was born March,
1958 in Richland, Washington, where he graduated from Richland High School
in 1976. After graduating from Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho, Scott served
a mission in Frankfurt, Germany. He later received bachelor of science degrees
from both BYU (1979) and the University of Utah (1981).
According to his partner Jonathan Warner, "Scott had a great love for teaching."
Known as "Professor Bates" or "Mr. Wizard," Scott taught briefly in Utah
before becoming a high school chemistry and German teacher in Maryland.
He was also an aerobics and fitness instructor at health clubs in the D.C.
area.
In addition to his partner Jonathan, Scott is survived by his parents J. Lambert and Ala Jean Bates of Richland; brothers Steven of Idaho Falls and Roger of Portland, Oregon; sisters Debra Davis of Antioch, California and Holly Bates of Richland; and ten nieces and nephews.
Scott's life was celebrated by his friends and family at a sunset gathering on August 6 at his Lock Overlook Farm, where his ashes were scattered.
