Philip B. Clayton (4 June 1954 - August 16, 1997)

Philip Bruce Clayton died in St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan, New York City on August 16, 1997 of complications from AIDS. He was 43.

Born in Billings, Montana, on June 4, 1954. He was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, coming to Los Angeles in 1977, where he began his professional career. He moved to New York City in 1983 and was based there for the rest of his life.

Phillip graduated from high school in Salt Lake City, attended the University of Utah, and performed in the theater in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and with professional road companies before permanently settling in New York and doing Broadway shows.

He was an original cast member of Jubilee at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. He toured in the national company of La Cage aux Folles (as Chantal). On Broadway he appeared in Starlight Express (as Expresso), Aspects of Love, and The Secret Garden. Regional Work included Paper Mill Playhouse and Darien Theater.

He is survived by his parents and two brothers. Services were held in Preston, Idaho, were he is buried.

Philip was an early member of L.A. Affirmation. He participated in several talent shows and Christmas programs.

He was bigger than life, outrageous, expressive, fiercely loyal to those he loved, spiritual, demanding--in short, a complex but ultimately a loving and kind friend. He will be greatly missed.
