Robert Painter (1949 - 1983)

Robert Michael Painter, the first person in the state of Utah to die from AIDS, was born April 23, 1949 in Salt Lake City, to Robert and Gloria Painter. He died in Utah on September 19, 1983.

Robert Michael Painter served a mission to Montreal, Canada. Upon return from his mission he married Patty Young and they had one son. They divorced in 1977 after Robert came out. Robert attended the University of Utah as both an undergraduate and graduate student. He worked as a contract administrator for Mountain Fuel Supply Company. He was survived by ex-wife and son (of Murray, Utah) and his lover, Bryan Martin, who also died of AIDS in November 1991.
