Roberto Jáuregui

Spanish original from the site of Fundación Huésped

On January 13, 1994, patients, friends, relatives, and AIDS-related health care personnel learned of the passing of Roberto Jáuregui. Roberto was born in La Plata on August 12, 1960. As a journalist he was known for his boldness, his fine sense of irony, and his infectious ability to face problems with courage and sense of humor. He lived his life to the fullest, and when he learned he was HIV-positive, he turned his enormous talent into hard work.

At a time when obtaining AZT was very difficult, he had the courage to make his condition public and ask for help through a letter to the editor. Many responded to his request, and he immediately shared the medicine he obtained with other patients. He then made a decision that affected both his life and the history of Argentina's struggle against AIDS. As a well-known public figure, he joined Fundación Huésped to educate the public, fight prejudice and discrimination, turn hypocrisy into positive action, and demand rights for the HIV-positive. As he made his condition public, Roberto courageously moved the issue of HIV and AIDS into the legal arena.

As coordinator for Fundación Huésped, Roberto promoted EXPRESIDA, the 1993 workshops for teenagers, fund-raising programs aimed at HIV/AIDS prevention, a public ad campaign carried out jointly with the Consejo Publicitario Argentino, lectures, debates, and interviews with the media. His goals were to teach prevention to the HIV-negative and to promote hope among the HIV-positive.

Roberto used to say, "AIDS is a tragedy that can be avoided; I didn't know how to do it, but you can." For the HIV positive, he coined the phrase, "Let's stay here til the day a cure is found." He didn't see that day, but if we take his legacy and fight for his cause, then he hasn't died in vain.

Fundación Huésped named its Day Clinic at Hospital Fernández after its coordinator, Roberto Jáuregui.
