Transportation Information
Airports
Getting to the conference venue (the Westin Market Street hotel) is easiest by flying into one of our two closest local airports: San Francisco International Airport (SFO), or Oakland International Airport (OAK). Either airport works, but the ground transportation to/from SFO is the easiest and quickest. (There is a third major airport serving the region, the Norman Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC), but it is quite a bit further away, and ground transportation is expensive and is not convenient.)
Airport-To-Hotel Ground Transportation (BART)
From either SFO or OAK you can take the Bay Area Rapid Transit train (called BART) train right to the hotel. The BART station nearest the hotel is called the Montgomery Street Station, whose closest station exit is less than 2 city blocks from the hotel, a safe 5-minute walk.
From SFO: Ground transportation via BART to the hotel is easiest and fastest if you fly into SFO. The BART fare from SFO is $8.10 and the trip takes 40 minutes (including walking time).
From OAK: If you choose to fly to OAK, you will need to take an additional $3 BART shuttle bus called AirBART from OAK to the nearest BART station in Oakland (Coliseum/Oakland Airport Station). The BART fare from OAK is $3.80 (plus an additional separate $3.00 cash-only exact-change AirBART bus fare) and the trip takes about an hour including the AirBART bus and walking.
You will need to purchase BART fare cards at the BART stations with either cash or credit cards at a BART fare machine. You don't need exact change for the BART fare machines, and the machines will tell you how much fare you need to purchase for your destination.
We recommend you review and confirm BART schedules, fares, and information at the Airport Connections page. For instance, make sure your flight does not arrive or depart at times before or after BART service begins or ends for the day. BART generally runs Weekdays (4:00 am - Midnight), Saturdays (6:00 am - Midnight), and Sundays (8:00 am - Midnight).
If you are in a wheelchair, also be sure to check the BART accessibility information page for the operating status of elevators at the station -- they can sometimes be temporarily out of service.
You can interact with the BART website via your web-enabled mobile phone using their mobile website.
Walk to Hotel
Please note that there are two Westin hotels within a few blocks of each other. You're going to the "Westin Market Street" south of Market, not to the "Westin St. Francis" in Union Square.
The Westin Market Street hotel (despite its name, it's not located directly on Market Street) is located at 50 3rd Street, on the corner of Stevenson Street and 3rd Street, just 1/2-block south of the intersection of Market and 3rd Street. We recommend you Google Map the address or neighborhood and bring that map with you for reference while you're walking.
There are several exits out of the BART Montgomery Street underground subway station. While any exit will work, you will want to look for the "Market & New Montgomery" exit that takes you up to Market Street closest toward the Hotel at 3rd Street. Look for the local area map of the neighborhood posted in the BART station to get your bearings. Regardless of which station exit you use, walk west on Market until you come to and cross 3rd Street (on the south side of Market), then walk south on 3rd for 1/2-block, and cross Stevenson Street. It's also worth mentioning that 3rd Street and Kearney Street are the same street -– 3rd is south of Market and Kearny is north of Market –- they both meet at Market Street. Again, this will be clear if you look at a detailed online map of this neighborhood.
Other Regional Transportation
A taxi ride from these two airports runs about $45 (SFO) or $60 (OAK) plus tip. If you take a taxi, be sure your driver understands you're going to the Westin Market Street, not the Westin St. Francis.
If you are not flying to the conference, your best transportation options still remain BART or MUNI trains/buses/street cars, all of which have stops (Montgomery Street station or stop) only about 1 block from the hotel. Driving to and parking overnight in the City is not recommended, as parking is prohibitively expensive downtown (about $50-$60 for overnight parking).
Depending from where you are coming, another option to consider is Amtrak via its Emeryville Station with its connecting Thruway bus service into San Francisco.
Getting Around San Francisco
Once you're at the conference (and we hope you have time to add some extra days to your stay), take time to explore the City. There are many ways to get around, including walking, biking, taxis, BART, the San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI) subway and buses, MUNI streetcars, cable cars, and City Car Share.

You can buy a visitor's MUNI City Passport that gives you unlimited access to the most MUNI system services for 1 day, 3-days, or 7-days.
A visitor's City Pass gives you transportation and access to several SF attractions for one low discounted price.

Weather
The best we can say is that weather is unpredictable. It could be sunny and warm in the city (usually in the 70's on a sunny day in October), but it can also be overcast or foggy and/or windy. Also, it can be sunny and warm in one part of the city, and foggy and cold in another part of the city, just a mile or two away. Bring light jackets/sweaters for cooler evenings. San Francisco is the "Foggy City" – and you'll be in our city at the tail end of our infamous summer/fall foggy season. Check a long-range weather forecast before you head to San Francisco.
