Affirmation 1987 Conference Report

Our ninth Affirmation General Conference was held in Salt Lake City, September 25-27, 1987, at the Salt Lake Sheraton Hotel & Towers. This years theme was, "A Gay Mormon Reunion."

Invited guests included: Ex-LDS Social Services Administrator and co-author of church handbook on homosexuality, Dr. Jan Stout, Biological issues and homosexuality. Dr. Stout is a member of the Association of Mormon Counselors And Psychotherapists (AMCAP) and provide valuable information supporting gay and lesbian Mormons and how they were trying to change the direction of church leaders with regard to homosexuality being "changeable." Another keynote speaker was Sylvia Pennington, author and popular speaker.

Special Caucuses included: Parents and Family Seminar, Women's Caucus: How do we more effectively influence and participate in Affirmation, Non-LDS partners, friends and spouses seminar.

Friday

There was a Friday evening reception, and college class reunions.

Saturday

Saturday morning breakfast, followed by workshops. The workshops included: "Building Better Communication with Church Leaders," "Spiritual Life after Excommunication," "Communicating with Spouses and Ex-Spouses," "Legal Concerns of the Gay and Lesbian Mormon," "Communicating with One's Family Members about Homosexuality," "Keys to a Long-Term Relationship," "Mental Health Panel: Addressing Homosexual Concerns."

Saturday afternoon: Mission reunions.

Saturday evening banquet. Paul Mortensen is presented with Affirmation's highest award for outstanding leadership and service to Affirmation. The award is named after him.

Saturday evening: Dancing and entertainment.

Sunday

Sunday morning devotional with special performances by Affirmation members. The SF Chapter of Affirmation choir performed "Let There Be Peace on Earth" led by George Mayorga. The Tabernacle Choir broadcasted live from Temple Square.
