In fact, many of them are gathering in San Pedro, California, in conjunction with an annual conference for gay LDS members and their friends. Each year, members of Affirmation: Gay & Lesbian Mormons meet together to provide education, support and social events, but this year, with the LDS Church's efforts to pass Proposition 8 looming on the horizon, many of the activities have acquired an undertone of political activism. After the conference workshops end on Saturday afternoon, October 11th, several LDS No-on-8 organizers will be available to discuss issues surrounding Proposition 8, including those issues raised by websites such as www.MormonsForMarriage.com (which openly opposes the LDS Church's stance on Prop. 8 and includes personal stories of gay and straight members affected by the political campaign), and www.Mormonsfor8.com (which tracks campaign contributions to ProtectMarriage.com and identifies which donors are LDS. As of October 1st, the group had identified individual LDS donors who had given $7.9 million, or 41% of all large donations, making LDS members the largest group of ProtectMarriage contributors). Affirmation members will also be available to discuss their experiences of being gay members of the Mormon church and how the Church's stance affects their lives and their hopes for the future, as well as the lives of their family members. Participants will also be able to discuss the impact of recent statements by LDS Church leaders.
