November, 1999
Connell ("Rocky") O'Donovan will be teaching a three week course on "A
Queer History of Mormonism" in San Francisco through the Harvey Milk
Institute!
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a rich, varied (even
contradictory) and well-documented history in response to homosexuality. In
this course, we will examine primary and secondary documents dealing with
widespread "buggery" in the Nauvoo Legion, "romantic friendships" amongst
polygamous wives, cross-dressing and other transgendered activities, the
development of and changes in church and Brigham Young University policies
toward homosexuality and transgenderism, the church's historical use of
various "therapies" (including electric shock and vomiting aversion) to
"cure" homosexuality, and the subsequent founding of the "Gay Mormon
Underground", later known as Affirmation. We will also be examining the
lives of several prominent Queer Mormons. Students will be expected to
purchase a course reader and encouraged to write a brief but in-depth
analysis of a primary document relating to our domain.
Connell O'Donovan was born and raised Mormon in Utah, completed a
mission to Brazil, married in the Salt Lake Temple and came
out in 1985. He was instrumental in founding Queer Nation Utah and the
Radical Faerie Circle of Salt Lake, and was formally excommunicated in 1991
for heresy. He is currently a free-lance writer and historian living in
Santa Cruz.
