Mexican Newspaper Features Affirmation

June 2005

El Universal, a Mexican newspaper, published 7 June 2005 a story about Affirmation with quotes by Carlos Peralta, Esteban Obregón, Olin Thomas, and Alyson Bolles.

"Affirmation was a pioneer among gay groups willing to confront a religious hierarchy and affirm their rights," reads the story. "Three years ago, Carlos Peralta found Affirmation's webpage. Today he is the director of the Mexican chapter, with more than 50 members on its rolls. Carlos decided to be honest to himself and to God, to live with his partner, and to dedicate his free time to help advance Affirmation's mission. Besides giving emotional support to GLBT Mormons, Carlos has contacted people in Latin America with the goal of creating new Affirmation groups."

The story includes some disappointing statements by former Seventy Horacio Tenorio, who calls homosexuality a "deviation" and suggests that psychotherapy may help "correct" it. Apparently Brother Tenorio doesn't know that sexual orientation is not a mental illness. He may have yet to discover that Our Heavenly Mother and Father love all their children unconditionally and do not care whether you are straight, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

When asked about Affirmation, Brother Tenorio said he had never heard of the group. Now that we have been featured in El Universal, maybe he will have to acknowledge that we exist ;)
