Puccini on Moroni: The Angel Atop the Manhattan Temple
“Angel Moroni Does Not Advocate Lesbianism”

January 2006

What's the Manhattan Temple Angel Moroni doing in the opening shots of a lesbian-themed screwball comedy? That's the question the audience asked filmmaker Maria Maggenti as she screened Puccini for Beginners at Park City's Sundance Festival.

According to Salt Lake Tribune's Sean P. Means, in the post-show Q&A, Maggenti said the angel's appearance was a coincidence.

"That was B-roll," she said. "We had to use whatever we shot."

Always irreverent, The Salt Lake Tribune entitled its story, "Angel Moroni Does Not Advocate Lesbianism."
