by Matt Christensen
May 2006
Eric Ethington, the gay returned missionary who succeeded in marrying his husband Doug in San Francisco before city hall stopped issuing licenses appears in the June 2006 issue of Out magazine in an ad for Wells Fargo, the bank where he works.
"Wells Fargo takes diversity beyond just accepting people," Eric is quoted as saying in the ad. "We actually live and breathe it and view it as distinctive competitive advantage."
Ethington is working with accounts and family law and estate planning attorneys with expertise in LGBT-specific issues to create a first-of-its-kind training program for Wells Fargo. "My involvement in this training is just one of the ways I can give back to our community," says Ethington.
Eric, his husband Doug, and their 2-year-old twin daughters became celebrities when the picture of their wedding appeared in a 1 March 2004 Newsweek story. Sheri Dew, President of LDS-owned Deseret Book, railed against Eric's family during an anti-gay rally, saying that she couldn't "stomach this—the thought of those girls being raised in that kind of a setting."
