D. Michael Quinn Featured in the “Wall Street Journal”
Friends and Supporters Start Fund to Help Him
by Lisa Hansen
May 2006
Renowned gay Mormon scholar D. Michael Quinn was featured in an April 6, 2006, story in the Wall Street Journal. Reporter Daniel Golden says that Quinn, who often addresses topics censored by the LDS Church, has become unhireable because almost all the funding for jobs in Mormon scholarship comes from Mormon donors.
In 2003 Brigham Young University threatened to withdraw funding for a conference it was co-sponsoring with Yale on Mormonism if Quinn was allowed to speak there. More recently, administrators at Arizona State University vetoed Quinn's hiring because they feared to alienate some of its 3,700 Mormon students or, even worse, Ira Fulton, the influential Mormon tycoon who has donated more than $155 million to ASU.
Surprised to learn that Quinn can't afford health insurance and sleeps on a futon in his mother's condo, a group of friends and supporters started a fund to help him: www.SupportMikeQuinn.net . The site incldudes a biography, quotes from Michael Quinn, and photographs.
In 2001, Affirmation: Gay & Lesbian Mormons, gave Quinn a special award to recognize his article, "Prelude to the National 'Defense of Marriage' Campaign: Civil Discrimination Against Feared or Despised Minorities."
