Sunstone Program to Include Gay-related Sessions

The 2006 Sunstone Symposium will include sessions of GLBT Mormon interest. The symposium will be held August 9-12 at the Salt Lake Sheraton City Centre Hotel. Students with valid ID can attend for free. For more information, visit www.sunstoneonline.com or download the full preliminary program.


Here are some of the sessions dealing with GLBT issues. THIS IS A PRELIMINARY PROGRAM, SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Workshop W3. Circling the Wagons around Our Gay Loved Ones, with Carol Lynn Pearson. NOTE: This is a Wednesday workshop, not free for students, and requires separate registration.

Session 162. Toward a Comparative Mormon Erotics, by David Knowlton and D. Michael Quinn, includes analysis of the Proclamation on the Family.

Session 235: Panel: Gender, Sex, Violence, and the Literary Search for a New Mormon Masculinity. One of the panelists is Scott Abbot, whose manuscript Immortal for Quite Some Time probes the life and identity of his brother, who died of AIDS complications.

Session 251: Using the Constitution to Define Marriage: Wrong Methods, Wrong Messages, Wrong Messengers. By Glenn Cornett. Respondent: D. Michael Quinn.

Session 256: May Swenson's Intelligent Design: Getting Under the Skin of God, Evolution, and Man as an Animal, by May's brother Paul Swenson.

Session 316: Gays in the Mormon Universe. Session with Chris Williams (an LDS bishop who recently came out), Buckley Jeppson, and Jeffery Nielsen.

Session 326: Good Bye, I Love You: Twenty Years Later, by Carol Lynn Pearson.

Session 336. Panel. Will, Grace, and Angels in Brokeback America: Straight Women, Gay Men, and Mormonism. This panel explores the phenomenon of straight LDS women falling in love with and/or marrying gay LDS men. With Emily Pearson and other panelists.

Session 356. Homosexuality and LDS Faith, by John Donald Gustav-Wrathall.

Session 366. Reading: Mormon America Princess. New solo show by Steven Fales.
