Affirmation Salt Lake to Participate in Equality Ride Send-Off
It Will Be Held February 25 at 4:00 pm
February 2007
The Salt Lake Chapter of Affirmation: Gay & Lesbian Mormons cordially
invites you to a send-off service for Matt Kulisch, Mike Cramer, and
Emil Pohlig as they prepare to leave for the 2007 Soulforce Equality
Ride.
The service will be held this Sunday, February 25th, at 4:00pm and hosted in the Skaggs Chapel of First Baptist Church at 777 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City, UT. This event is underwritten by the GLBT Fellowship at First Baptist.
Come to hear from Matt, Mike, and Emil about their participation in the Equality Ride and their efforts for social justice in the LGBT communities of Utah, Idaho and beyond. A special guest speaker will also be joining them to speak on spirituality and social justice. Refreshments will be served afterward. Please take the opportunity to mingle with our Utah Equality Riders and wish them well in their efforts.
Homophobia is globally pervasive, and no community or school escapes its reach. In 2006, during the inaugural Equality Ride, participants traveled to nineteen schools and engaged students, faculty, and administrators in conversation about the damaging effects of homophobic doctrine, the false notion that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender identities are sick and sinful. This year, the journey continues with fifty young adults going to thirty-two Christian colleges and universities. Two buses are taking the group on two distinct routes around the country in creative pursuit of social justice. In doing so, they are empowered to change countless lives. Love liberates the oppressed, redeems the lost, and resurrects the spirit.
The 2007 Soulforce Equality Ride features two buses that will visit thirty-two schools with policies banning the enrollment of openly LGBT students, including Baylor University, Bob Jones University, Brigham Young University, Yellowstone Baptist College, and many more.
Soulforce's message to students is that God loves you, unconditionally. Even though your parents, your friends, your school, and your church may not see you or love you for who you are, God does. People will tell you that the Bible and the doctrine condemn you. It's not true. Read closer. Study harder. Look outside the box you've been forced into. The true message of the scriptures and the doctrine are all about wisdom and love, not about judgment and obedience and certainly not about hate.
