An article in the New York Times reveals that the homophobic Massachusetts Family Institute received $10,000 from Mormon presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, along with an appreciative note. The Institute is affiliated with the National Family Research Council in Washington and with Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs. The three organizations fight against marriage equality.

According to the March 11 article, Romney has been donating heavily to anti-abortion, anti-gun control, anti-marriage equality, and anti-taxation groups in order to improve his image among conservatives. Romney also contributed $10,000 to a non-profit organization affiliated with the National Review, $25,000 to the Heritage Foundation, and $35,000 to the Federalist Society.

Romney, who once promised that if elected senator he would do more for gay people than Robert Kennedy, turned his back on GLBT families as Massachusetts governor and fought tirelessly against the right of same-sex couples to marry.

According to the story, some conservatives are accusing Romney of buying support with fat checks. Romney has never disclosed his net worth, but analysts say it is likely to exceed $500 million. In 2002 he spent $6 million of his own money in his campaign to become governor of Massachusetts.
