Affirmation Members Featured in Story
November 2007
Affirmation members Alyson Bolles and Lester Leavitt were featured in a story by the Religion News Service. Alyson, who serves as senior assistant director, recounted an incident that happened in Sunday School when she was 15:
“The bishop asked what if a child walked into the kitchen and saw two men kissing? I said the child might think the two men loved each other. The bishop then called on a boy who said, ‘oh it's disgusting.' The bishop pointed and said, ‘Alyson, he is right,’” she said.
Alyson left the class in tears, but kept the incident to herself. “When the bishop says (you are) disgusting, who are you going to tell?” Alyson added.
Also interviewed for the story was Lester Leavitt, who last July flew to Salt Lake City with his wife Barbara Leavitt to ask the LDS Church and Evergreen to change how they treat gay and lesbian people who come to them for help.
“Advice from leaders of the Mormon Church was that, if you would just marry a woman, the natural love would blossom and you would experience all the joys of marriage,” Lester said in a July 2007 press conference. “The message that I trusted was incorrect.”
