University of Utah Student Launches LGBT-Related Group
“We hope to give U students a place free of judgment where they can truly develop their spiritual selves”

October 2008

University of Utah student Matthew Kulisch, along with supportive faculty, is helping launch a Bible-study group geared towards LGBT students. The group, called Under the Rainbow, is seeking to discuss the theological issues that face the LGBT community and its allies. The issues stretch beyond LGBT identity into other social issues such as gender, race, and class, and into systems of authority and power.

Matt Kulisch, 25, became well known two years ago when, as a BYU student, he decided to join the Soulforce Equality Ride demonstration held at his own campus and led a “die-in” event in remembrance of gay Mormon suicides.

“We hope to make discussions surrounding the interpretation of Scripture, God, theology and religion available to U students,” says Matthew. “We hope to give U students, particularly those who identify as LGBT, a place to come to truly wrestle with these issues. Finally, we hope to give U students a place free of judgment where they can truly develop their spiritual selves.”

The group is currently open only to students in the state of Utah.
