AP Story Features Mormon Supporter of Marriage Equality
by Seba Martinez
6 October 2008
Laura Compton, a Mormon living in Cupertino, California, who has been active in support of marriage equality, was featured yesterday in an article by the Associated Press.
“The Proposition 8 rhetoric is very divisive and it is hurting congregations,” Laura told the AP. “That gulf gets wider every week.” Laura is a contributor to Mormons for Marriage and a mother of two.
Under a directive from the LDS First Presidency, Mormons have donated $8 million against marriage equality. However, a handful of organizations, including Mormons for Marriage, are raising their voices against discrimination and in favor of marriage equality.
In her own congregation, Laura Compton said members who are undecided or who disagree are either silent or absent from the pews.
“They're voting with their feet,” said Laura.
Laura said that Eyring's call for unity in the most recent general conference was “a beautiful message that we really needed to hear.”
“I hope people really listen to that,” she added. “If we're just going to keep fighting... how is that pleasing to God?”
