SUU Students to Demonstrate during Pres. Monson’s Visit
“Demonstration of love and support for GLBTQ families”

March 2009

A demonstration of love and support for GLBTQ families is in the planning stages for the May 2, 2009 Southern Utah University (SUU) Commencement in Cedar City, Utah. LDS Church President Thomas Monson will be a speaker and receive an honorary degree. Some SUU student organizations see Monson as an inappropriate choice for the commencement speaker.

Alumni and other organizations see this is as an open invitation for demonstration showing that GLBTQ community have families too by requesting Monson support Common Ground for expanded health care, fair housing and employment, and removal of inheritance and insurance barriers for GLBTQ families. Elder L. Whitney Clayton stated the LDS Church “does not oppose civil unions or domestic partnerships.” The SUU commencement is a perfect time to remind Monson his support will help GLBTQ graduates obtain employment, housing and medical care long after they graduate with their SUU diplomas.

Dean O’Driscoll, Vice President for University Relations and commencement committee chair, told the school’s newspaper, The SUU Journal, that “A university is the perfect place to have differences of opinion.” As quoted in the SUU Journal, university President Michael T. Benson, stated: “I staunchly believe that education is about exposing one's mind to a whole spectrum of ideas and philosophies and allowing others the same right.”
