Plan Underway to Take “Facing East” to the Silver Screen
June 2009
Renowned LDS writer Carol Lynn Pearson has just announced a plan to turn her play Facing East into a film.
“I am very excited about this film,” says Pearson. “The play has saved lives, healed families and changed hearts. I know the film will be an important part of the historical shift that is happening to make this world better for all of us.”
Facing East is the story of a Mormon couple dealing with the suicide of their gay son. The play premiered in Salt Lake City in April 2007. It later played in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities.
“Facing East may well be the best thing Carol Lynn Pearson has ever written, at least for the stage” wrote Ivan M. Lincoln in the Deseret Morning News. “It raises plenty of questions and concerns but doesn't offer any pat answers.”
“What the play does well is offer a respectful portrait of Mormons in struggle,” wrote Ellen Fagg in the Salt Lake Tribune. Fagg calls Pearson's new play “a tightly wound domestic tragedy that raises questions about faith and sexuality.”
Anyone interested in assisting with this project is invited to contact Carol Lynn Pearson or send questions to facingeastinfo@gmail.com.
