Today, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unveiled a new website in an effort to “encourage … civil conversation” about homosexuality in the Church. Affirmation: Gay and Lesbian Mormons applauds this effort as a step in the right direction on a path that we hope will continue to evolve in years to come.

We are grateful for the recognition that church members have room to grow in reaching out with love to LGBT Mormons. It wasn’t that long ago that LGBT Mormons lived in fear of telling their friends and family members about their sexual orientation.

The Church website states: “One thing that’s always important is to recognize the feelings of a person, that they are real, that they are authentic, that we don’t deny that someone feels a certain way.” We commend the Church for telling its members the truth, that the feelings we LGBT Mormons have are real and authentic, and agree that this must be the starting point for all meaningful dialogue.

Affirmation has been working for over 30 years to give voice to LGBT Mormons, and we are hopeful that this initiative will bring previously excluded voices into the dialogue. It is a welcome step in the right direction, and we hope many more will come.

This website will do much to help families love their children or spouses who come out instead of rejecting them. Research has shown that rejection leads to an 800% increase in the likelihood of suicide.

We pray that this initiative will continue to encourage members of the Church to take the message of loving the LGBT Mormons in their lives to heart and continue to engage in authentic conversations with us. We are ready and open to talking about our lives and struggles as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

For LGBT Mormons who feel disheartened because of the current Church doctrines and policies in relation to same-sex relationships, Affirmation is here for you as a place where you can be completely affirmed in your faith and feel fully included and at peace with regards to your sexuality.
