Steven Larry Wheeler (1949-2000)
Steven Wheeler was born on October 22, 1949 in Blackfoot, Idaho. He graduated from Snake River High
School and continued his education at Brigham Young University. He served a mission for
the LDS Church in the northern Japan mission. After his mission he continued his
education at the University of Utah, where he received his Masters in Business Administration.
He worked for 20 years for the Utah Retirement Board as a market analyst and internal audit
director.
Steve committed suicide on May 23, 2000. He was 50 years old.
During the funeral a friend said, "Nothing can bring back Steve's laugh; nothing
can bring back the glory of his mind, the brilliance of his wit."
Words by Steve:
To Everyone: I cannot fight depression any longer. I have had to fight depression all my
life, although for most of my life I had no idea what was wrong. Nothing works. Anti-depression
drugs, counseling, mood enhancement drugs, supplements--nothing lifts the darkness. Churchill
called it the "Black Dog." It is more like the black death. Fifty years is long enough. The
depression grows deeper the older I get. I can see no way out. I am going to a place where
there is no darkness, no pain, and no sadness. I am truly sorry. Please forgive me. --Steven
L. Wheeler
